18th-century cottage renovation with contemporary charm
Set in the Lancashire countryside, this cottage renovation is a standout example of how traditional architecture and contemporary living can coexist. This large-scale renovation project involved the extensive reimagining of an 18th-century red sandstone cottage, previously unoccupied for over two years.
Working with the clients from early site discussions through to completion, MWB Residence dismantled poorly executed later additions and rebuilt the property to suit modern life. An open-plan kitchen-dining-living space formed the heart of the home, accompanied by a study, utility, boot room, and ground-floor master suite. Upstairs, two guest bedrooms and a bathroom provided additional family space.
Craftsmanship & Character
Heritage features were preserved wherever possible, including the original chimney and red sandstone exterior, while contemporary details were thoughtfully introduced. Exposed stonework, pillowed limestone floors, solid oak staircases, and Crittall-style glazing gave the home its distinctive character. A traditional English oak porch and reclaimed stone wall added warmth and integrity to the rural setting.
Sustainability & Legacy
Reclaimed materials, breathable lime mortar, and smart spatial planning ensured the home’s long-term durability and sustainability, carefully honouring its heritage while future-proofing it for modern life.
